Great Tech Toys this Christmas | Apple Store Highlights 2015

Great Tech Toys this Christmas - Apple Store, Covent Garden

On Wednesday 25th November, we at Fundamentally Children were delighted to host the ‘Great Tech Toys for Christmas’ event at the Apple Store. It was such a pleasure to have an opportunity to share how much we love the Tiggly, Osmo and Sphero SPRK products and to see the audience get so excited about them too!

Apps & Tech Expert, Lucy Gill, was delighted to be on our expert panel alongside Ruth Arnold (aka @GeekMummy), Simon Jary (Publisher of Macworld, PCadvisor and TechAdvisor) and Oliver Quinlan (Educational Tech expert and author of The Thinking Teacher) - with discussions beautifully chaired by Fundamentally Children’s Georgina Dalton. It made for a really balanced discussion. It was lovely to hear the personal perspective from Ruth of how much her own children love and have learnt from these products, backed up by the wider testing of the products with children done by Fundamentally Children.

Equally it was fabulous to hear how well these products stand out amongst the huge range of tech products reviewed by TechAdvisor as well as to discuss all aspects of their benefits for child development and education from Lucy and Oliver.

Here is a quick summary of the 3 toys we featured:

Tiggly Math

A wonderful toy particularly for 3 - 5 year olds helping children learn basic maths concepts in a fun, engaging way. The physical part of the toy comprises 5 number rods each representing a number from 1 to 5, inspired by Montessori, which can be played with separately and connect with magnets but their real power is when used in conjunction with 3 apps:tiggly-math

  • Tiggly Cardtoons: helps teach basic maths ideas. Buttons appear on screen when the counting rods are placed on screen and then transform into a variety of objects, encouraging the child’s imagination whilst the counting from the narrator helps reinforce basic numeracy.
  • Tiggly Addventure: use the counting rods to guide Tiggly through his adventure over bridges, up ladders and even in outer space to give his grandmother an apple or a present to his friend – all whilst learning basic maths concepts!
  • Tiggly Chef: help the chef choose the right quantities of ingredients using counting and basic addition skills to make each recipe.

Look out for Tiggly’s big news today - a new app in partnership with a leading children’s brand is being announced today.

Osmo

A unique and fabulous educational product that helps children from 5+ learn and be social through a series of games - with an additional ‘genius’ pack being launched soon to add an additional Numbers game to the mix.

The main Osmo product comes with 4 games:

  • Tangram – a game based on an ancient puzzle. The player has physical geometric pieces of different colours, and uses these to re-create the puzzle on the screen. As they match the outline, the screen will highlight the correctly placed pieces.Osmo toy review
  • Newton – the aim of the game is to guide balls that fall from the top of the screen to target areas on-screen. You can do this by drawing lines, scribbles, and doodles on a piece of paper in front of the iPad, or by placing physical objects anywhere in the physical play area.
  • Words – a word game played in pairs in which the children guess the hidden word (related to the image shown on screen) by placing real-life letter tiles in front on the iPad – the app will detect how many letters were correct. Children can take it in turns or play ‘fast and furious’ to see who can get the most correct letters and complete the word fastest.
  • Masterpiece - a genius drawing game allowing you to draw anything on real blank paper. Take a photo of virtually anything and Osmo turns it into a series of lines on screen that you are guided through tracing on paper to create your masterpiece. A rewarding challenge for adults and children alike.

Sphero

The Sphero SPRK Edition and the SPRK app are designed to inspire a love of robotics, coding, and STEM principles while teaching the power of cause, effect, and conditions in programming. The clear shell allows users to see the immediate connection between the program they created and how the guts of their Sphero work. Sphero SPRK Edition, coupled with the intelligently designed app experience, encourages users to think deeper and generate new ideas for what’s possible between a program, a robot, the physical world, and their imagination.

The Last Word

The value of these products for their target age was very clear to all the audience who had a lovely time playing with them afterwards and quizzing our experts and representatives from the manufacturers. We were particularly pleased to see how each of the products appealed to different members.
