BBC Children in Need and ASDA Case Study

Brief & Background

Each year, BBC Children in Need partners with Asda to fundraise with the retailers’ colleagues, customers and suppliers, for vulnerable children. The initiative raises an enormous £2million each year, resulting in a total so far of £22million.

Since 2017, the donations from Asda have been used to fund a project called the Power of Play, which is where we came in.

In 2019, BBC Children in Need were looking to explore areas of need relating to play to inform their funding decisions for the project. To support them with this, we carried out a literature review to help demonstrate the importance of play for child development and highlight barriers to play. This enabled us to identify areas in need of funding.

How we helped

  • We produced a comprehensive report for Children in Need which included:
    • A summary of the evidence showing the benefit of play for child development
    • An overview of the state of play and play policies throughout the UK
    • Identification of the financial, geographical, cultural and physical barriers to play
    • Examples of existing play initiatives, best practice, and recommendations for funding
  • We went on to support BBC Children in Need in presenting the key research findings and recommendations to Asda
